Annual Strategic Review in Côte d’Ivoire Reinforces Government’s Commitment to Nationwide TaRL Scale-up

by | Sep 4, 2024

On June 28, 2024, the TaRL Africa team in Côte d’Ivoire conducted an annual strategic retreat with key members of the Ministry of National Education and Literacy (MENA) regarding the government led TaRL program, Programme d’Enseignement Ciblé (PEC). Led by the Technical Advisor to the Minister, along with Professor Kone Raoul and the President of the Bagoué Regional Council’s representative, TaRL Africa reviewed the progress and challenges of the past year and discussed our plans for the future.

We highlighted significant progress, particularly in the government-led TaRL program under the National Program to Improve Basic Skills (PNAPAS). This program, which was implemented across six DRENA regions in 2023-24, reached 1,423 schools and 186,989 children. The results were impressive: 46% of children were able to read a paragraph by the end of the year, up from 22% at the beginning. In addition, numeracy skills improved, with the percentage of children who could solve subtraction operations increasing from 32% to 64% within the same period.

These encouraging outcomes, lauded by MENA officials, demonstrate the effectiveness of our interventions. Nevertheless, our Country Director, Mr. Amos DEMBELE, emphasised the necessity for closer collaboration and timely data sharing to ensure the continued success and smooth scaling up of PEC nationwide starting in September 2024.

As we look ahead, all stakeholders remain enthusiastic and dedicated to our mission of enhancing basic education across Côte d’Ivoire.
