The Challenge

90 percent of African children can’t read and recognize numbers by age 10. Without profound changes, half of the primary school population in Sub-Saharan Africa will reach adolescence without these basic skills—crippling Africa’s economic growth, democratic institutions, and health outcomes.

Our Strategic Approach: Demand-led, Co-created, Government-owned

We catalyse government-led change by working alongside Ministries of Education and a network of dedicated partners across sub-Saharan Africa, ensuring that solutions are rooted in their demands and ownership.

How We Do It: Three-Phase Methodology

Phase 1: Diagnose & Align on the Problem

We start by understanding the unique challenges within each education system. Through rigorous needs assessment and stakeholder engagement, we:

Evaluate current demand for change within government systems
Introduce Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) as a proven, evidence-based solution
Build shared understanding across government, educators, and communities about the scope of the challenge and potential pathways forward

Phase 2: Co-design & Pilot

We partner with government to adapt and test solutions within their context. Together, we:

Adapt TaRL materials to reflect local languages, cultures, and curriculum frameworks
Strengthen government implementation capacity through training and support
Iterate and learn through pilot programs to refine approaches before scale

Phase 3: Transition & Transform

We support governments to own, scale, and institutionalize the approach. This includes:

Scaling what works across regions and grade levels
Informing national education policy and practice with evidence
Locking sustainable funding into government budgets to ensure long-term viability
